Canada Practices Caremongering During Covid-19 Crisis

In the face of fear and uncertainty over the pandemic, Canadians are being...well...Canadian by doing what they can to take care of each other and society's most vulnerable people. Across the nation, people are "caremongering" instead of scaremongering, ensuring people who need help and support can get it. Social media is the primary platform for caremongering, with groups setting up in cities and towns across Canada.

In Ottawa, Canada's capital city, the caremongering Facebook group's goal is "to organize the local community on the grassroots level to ensure vulnerable community members have access to food, housing, healthcare, and other necessities. It is also for the redistribution of resources in the case that stockpiling prevents people from accessing basics. You can also post requests for aid/support here. Please share any opportunities/events that may be helpful to support community members!"

According to the BBC, over 35 groups were set up in 72 hours with over 30,000 members. The Toronto group has over 9000 members.  From cooking meals to buying and delivering groceries, to provinding resources and uplifting conversation online, Canadians are working together to get their communities through dark days. It's the Canadian way.

On behalf of, be safe, be kind and remember that your responsible actions are saving other peoples' lives too.
