Happy World Oceans Day

Canada is bordered by three oceans (Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic) and has the longest coastline in the world.  It is no wonder Canadians recognize the significance of healthy oceans to their future and the planet’s survival.  Today, join others in celebrating World Oceans Day.

The Government of Canada proposed the concept of a World Ocean Day at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. Numerous partners and support groups circulated a petition urging the United Nations to officially recognize World Oceans Day as 8 June each year. Tens of thousands of people from all parts of the world signed online and paper copies of the petition and, as a result of this global effort, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution in December 2008. World Oceans Day is now officially recognized by the UN as 8 June each year.
